Special Announcement for AMCAS Users and Medical College of GA applicants

ATTENTION AMCAS APPLICANTS:
Regarding the AMCAS Pilot Letter Service:
We have been working with AMCAS to ensure that there are minimal changes to how you use VE if you Are an applicant to a pilot school.  Basically, AMCAS will access letters that are posted to VE for applicants to the pilot schools.  Through an automated process they will transmit those letters to the appropriate schools.
If you are applying to one or more of the pilot schools:

  • You should indicate in your AMCAS application that your  letters will be in the form of a "letter packet." Emory operates under a letter packet system
  • You should enter (the advisor) or your designated representative as the "Primary Author/Contact." Charles N Collier, Jr., Director Pre-professional Services
  • APPLICANTS PLEASE NOTE!
IF YOU INFORMED AMCAS IN THE “AMCAS LETTER SERVICE  SECTION” THAT THEY WOULD BE RECEIVING INDIVIDUAL LETTERS, YOU MUST CONTACT AMCAS IN WRITING  AND INFORM THEM THAT THEY WILL NOT RECEIVE THE LETTERS AS INDICATED; EMORY OPERATES UNDER A LETTER PACKET SYSTEM. INDICATE THAT THEY WILL BE RECEIVING A LETTER PACKET FROM: CHARLES N COLLIER, JR., DIRECTOR PRE-PROFESSIONAL SERVICES, EMORY UNIVERSITY CAREER CENTER. THIS WILL BE THE ONLY WAY TO BE ASSIGNED A NEW ID NUMBER.

  • If you are including letters from others in your packet, it is not necessary for you to list those letter writers in the "Additional Authors" section of the AMCAS letters tab.
  • After entering this information on the AMCAS application, you will be provided with a printable form containing an AMCAS Letter ID. You should either provide the Career Center with the form or provide us with the Letter ID.

If you are not applying to any of the pilot schools, you do not have to enter any letter information into the AMCAS application, will not have an AMCAS letter ID, and you don't have to do anything different with the applicant record.

ATTENTION MEDICAL COLLEGE OF GA APPLICANTS

The Medical College of Georgia (MCG) has for some time required two
"personal" Letters of Recommendation (LORs) in addition to a committee
letter and/or separate LORs from professors, instructors, etc.  The
"personal" letters might include one from a physician (recommended) and the
other from anyone who knows them well personally, but is not related to
them. In the past, applicants could be invited for interviews prior to the
Admissions Committee's review of the LORs.

The Medical College of Georgia School of Medicine has made changes to
its admissions process.  The changes include:

1.    All applicants will have all three of their LORs sent to the Admissions
Office  (committee plus two personal LORs) before they can be considered for an interview.

The Admissions Committee will no longer review an applicant's file
without the three LORs.  This new policy will begin with Early Decision
and will follow on through Regular Decision for the 2008-2009 admissions
cycle.

Advisors who will be sending letters through the secure site Virtual Evals
will be able to attach them sometime in early June
2008.  Please contact our Office if you use other secure, electronic
sites for references.  If as an advisor your are transmitting a committee
letter or a packet of letters that does not include the "personal LORs,"
please advise your applicants to have their personal LORs sent directly to
the MCG admissions office as soon as possible so as not to delay evaluation
of their letters.

2.    The interview format will no longer consist of two closed
interviews.  The new interview format will consist of one, open file
interview by a voting admissions committee member.
