As a lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT) student entering the workforce, you may find yourself thinking about how your sexual identity, gender identity, and gender expression relate to your job search.  The following collection of resources may be helpful for the LGBT person entering the workplace. If you have questions about career planning, concerns about your job search, and are questioning how your multiple identities might influence your career decisions, we welcome and encourage you to discuss these concerns with a career counselor.

  • Human Rights Campaign: Information on workpalce and corporate attitudes and policies surrounding sexual orientation. Includes links to information about employee groups, organizations and companies that offer benefits to domestic partners.

  • Out For Work: Nonprofit agency to educate, prepare and empower LGBT students for the workplace
  • Out Professionals: LGBT professional networking site
  • Corporate Pride Directory: Directory that rates employsers according to their non-discrimination policies, benefits and support for LGBT populations.
  • Gay Financial Network:
  • Lamda Legal: National organization committed to achieving full recognition of the civil rights of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transgender people and those with HIV through impact litigation, education and public policy work.

  • Consortium of Higher Education Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Resource Professionals: The mission of the Consortium is to achieve higher education environments in which lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender students, faculty, staff, administrators, and alumni have equity in every respect. Our goals are to support colleagues and develop curriculum to professionally enhance this work; to seek climate improvement on campuses; and to advocate for policy change, program development, and establishment of LGBT Office/Centers.
  • Al-Fatiha (for LGBT Muslims): Al-Fatiha is dedicated to Muslims of all cultural and ethnic backgrounds who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer, and questioning or exploring their sexual orientation and/or gender identity (LGBTIQQ), and their families, friends and allies.
  • American Civil Liberties Union LGBT Project: The LGBT Project fights discrimination and moves public opinion on LGBT rights through the courts, legislatures and public education across five issue areas.
  • Gender Public Advocacy Coalition (GenderPAC): Organization that works to ensure that classrooms, communities, and workplaces are safe for everyone to learn, grow, and succeed - whether or not they meet expectations for masculinity and femininity
  • The Task Force: An organization that works to build the grassroots political power of the LGBT community to win complete equality.
  • The Transgender Law and Policy Institute: Anon-profit organization dedicated to engaging in effective advocacy for transgender people in our society.
  • HireDiversity.com: This website has resources for several diverse populations including African Americans, Asian Americans, disabled, gay & lesbian, Hispanics, Native Americans, and women.
  • PlanetOut: Networking resource that has a Money and Careers section with news and resources including ways to find gay-friendly organizations.
  • Idealist.Org: Search on "gay, lesbian and bisexual issues" for a list of LGBT-related non-profit organizations in the U.S.
  • Immigration Equality: National grass roots organization that works to end discrimination in U.S. immigration law against lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and HIV-positive people, and to help obtain asylum for those persecuted in their home country based on their sexual orientation, transgender identity or HIV-status.

An extensive resource guide covers online information services, gay professional and networking organizations, employee groups, books, statutes and ratings of companies' policies on nondiscrimination and domestic-partner benefits.
